FAQ

What are the energy-saving benefits of the Green Trailer?

Eight solar panels and a four-foot wind generator power nearly everything in the trailer. Only the high-efficiency air-conditioning system, used just when necessary, requires electric energy. Solar shades on the trailer’s windows allow in light, but not weather, reducing heating and cooling loads by 40 percent. In addition, spray foam insulation reduces energy costs by as much as 30 percent. Save for the air-conditioning, the trailer requires absolutely no electrical energy. In fact, it’s energy positive, contributing power
(tool charging and other needs) in addition to serving its
own needs.

How is the Green Trailer more comfortable for its users? The Green Trailer’s nine windows offer 102 square feet of energizing natural light, three times that of a typical trailer. Stale trailer air is a thing of the past. Three solar-powered exhaust fans, spray insulation that guards against allergens, and low-VOC paint and formaldehyde free furniture all add up to cleaner, fresher air. Plus, that spray insulation means the fickle Midwest weather stays outside. Finally, users have access
to a composting toilet inside the trailer rather than a Johnny-on-the-Spot, which speaks for itself.

Will McCownGordon create more green trailers?
Many of the techniques used in the Green Trailer—like reused and recycled materials, high-efficiency lighting and onsite recycling—are already in use in McCownGordon’s other trailers. The firm will continue
to incorporate eco-friendly elements in all of their
jobsite trailers.

Where will this trailer go?
The Green Trailer will stay in the greater Kansas City area to provide easy access for those seeking tours. Because the trailer can satisfy one of the innovation credits required for projects seeking LEED® certification, deciding where to place the trailer will rely on the highest potential client benefit.

The Green Trailer is currently being utilized at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), 51st and Cherry Streets in Kansas City, Missouri – location of the future LEED® Silver UMKC student union. The $38.3 million project is scheduled to start construction March 2009 and to be completed by fall semester 2010.

What techniques can be translated to a typical non-mobile office? Almost everything! The Green Trailer is just a typical office that happens to be on wheels. From solar power to eco-friendly furniture to simple recycling, most of
the techniques and products used in the Green Trailer are applicable to any office or home.
